Perspective

I did the first interview for my study today. Not a lot to talk about yet--I have to listen to the recoding again, do my summary notes, and then start transcribing.

But one thing my participant said today struck me. Talking about her 100+ year old mother with breast cancer, she told me that they never thought about trying to treat it "at 104, what would be the point? What would be her quality of life?"

How affirming to see not everyone thinks any threat to life needs to be fought tooth and nail, no matter what the context.

Sounds like a qualitative study on the lived experience of having a family member with breast cancer.

Can you tell I'm in a research class? LOL!

It is a qualitative, descriptive exploratory study about the experiences of family caregivers of assisted living residents enrolled in hospice.

So, not disease specific, and I don't use "lived experience" because that implies a phenomenological framework -- but yeah, your edumacation is showing :)

The quality of life to some is measured by age, if a person is too young to die, people will say that that life is precious for not living for many years, yet if an old woman is about to die, many will say that it is normal, and death is inevitable. Ah, the irony of different perspectives of people, eh. :)
